Basketball State Tournaments

Story by Lexie Bray

This season has been a picture of success for both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams at Central High School. Their moments came when they stepped onto the floor of Murphy Center at MTSU. Both teams won district, region, sub-state tournaments and made it to the state tournaments at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU).

“Both the girls and boys qualifying for the State Tournament is a historic event for our school and our community. I believe that our teams’ successes have been a great source of pride for the community, and have helped give our school a real boost in school spirit,” said boys’ basketball coach Joe Layne. “The support we received from the community and the school was unbelievable. We had donations made by people all over the county. We had students and staff members to make pictures and signs. We had hundreds of people to make the long trip to Murfreesboro to cheer on the players.”

Players on both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams experienced this sense of unity. “What made us more successful this year is that we worked together as a team and just played ball,” said senior basketball player Chelsey Lowe. “My favorite moment in tournaments was playing in front of all those people, and giving it our all,” said junior basketball player Alex Fountain. Alex was also one of the three Mr. Basketball finalists in the state. “It was great having the team supporting me the whole time. It felt like I was able to see some of the rewards of hard work during the off season. I made history being the first person in the county to be a Mr. Basketball finalist.”
