Computer Science Program at Wartburg Central High School

Graduation Requirement

Beginning with the incoming 2024-25 freshman cohort, candidates for regular high school diplomas must earn at least one computer science credit in high school. The courses listed below meet the computer science graduation requirement and may also substitute for the third lab science or fourth math requirement.

  • Duration: One Semester
  • Credit: 1 credit
  • Grade Levels: 9-12
  • Requirement: Required for all students beginning with the freshman cohort of 2024-25. Available to take online.
  • Prerequisite: None; also meets the third lab science or fourth math requirement if taken during the senior year.

 

Course Description

Computer Science is an introductory computing course that introduces students to the breadth of the field of computer science in a project-based learning environment. Students will investigate problems and design and evaluate solutions using algorithmic thinking and testing. Using digital data analysis, they will begin to identify trends and patterns to create new knowledge. Students also explain how computing innovations and computing systems—including the internet—work, explore their potential impacts, and contribute to a computing culture that is collaborative and ethical.

 

Department Overview

The Wartburg Central High School Computer Science Department was developed to encourage students to become producers of technology, responsible digital citizens, and to prepare students for the demanding technology initiatives awaiting them after high school. The department provides vertical alignment of curriculum, opportunities to engage in extracurricular clubs, and other initiatives that will encourage students in the area of computer science. The work in this department supports all curricular departments.

 

The WCHS Computer Science program and curriculum are aligned with the Computer Science Teacher Association standards and modified to meet the needs of Morgan County students. Additionally, they have been aligned to the Tennessee Department of Education Digital Readiness Standards.
